Description

Course Overview

The MMCD IDS – Civil 3D Engineering PIM Preparation course provides instruction on how to prepare standardized post construction PIM Project Information Models in MMCD IDS using Autodesk Civil 3D 2026. A PIM Project Information Model is a standardized, attributed and spatially coordinate post construction data deliverable that enables automatic intake of asset data by owners.

This demonstration based session walks through the entire PIM creation process starting with data created during design modeling.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will understand:

  1. The entire process for creating a PIM using design model data as a starting point
  2. How feature representation standards contribute to the creation of a PIM
  3. Methodology for using Map 3D object data for attribution
  4. How to copy a design model drawing DWG file and prepare for PIM creation
  5. How to selectively remove layouts from DWG files
  6. Procedures for removing AutoCAD/C3D entity/object data and annotation not required for PIM
  7. The need to update PIM based on actual “as constructed” conditions
  8. Attaching Map 3D object data
  9. Editing Map 3D object data
  10. Quality control on Project Information Model
  11. Mechanisms to support PIM adoption into current workflows

Course Topics

Key topics covered include:

  • Project drawing structure with ACAD Xrefs and C3D Reference Objects
  • Working with and deleting AutoCAD layouts
  • Selecting and removing object/entity/annotation features not required for PIM creation
  • Feature representation validation in PIM drawings
  • Identification and understanding of owner specific tracked assets
  • Additional feature attribution using Map 3D object data tables
  • Overview of Map 3D object data tables used for attribution
  • Attaching, editing and removing object data
  • Annotations to identify object data attachments
  • QC on PIM DWG file

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for:

  • Consultants and Local Government staff involved data deliverable creation and consumption
  • GIS technicians and C3D technicians and engineers responsible for post construction data deliverables
  • Department managers wanting to better understand processes for standardized data deliverables and intake
